What is a template website?
The website that you are currently looking at was built using a template from ThemeForest.
A template website is like a piece of Ikea furniture – it is a flat-packed package of all of the coding and files that you need to create the framework of a website. When you select a template website you are selecting a pre-defined layout for your new site – the template determines where different elements of your website will sit, such as the header, home page slider, side banners, footer etc.
It is a quick and
easy easier way to get a site up and running so that you can get straight to loading the content and creating a great user experience.
What is possible with a template website?
The important thing to remember when picking a template website is that in most cases you are ONLY selecting the layout of the site; things like colour themes, imagery, text, buttons, icons and content can be edited and altered once you have imported the template.
For example, this is what the original template for the BeKonstructive website looked like, before I changed it to my brand colours and uploaded my content: https://wydethemes.com/flora3/
Pretty different hey? As you can see, I left some of the functionality, moved some bits around and gave the colour theme a complete overhaul. In my opinion, the sky is the limit when using a template to build a website – sure you can pay a bit extra to get some cool plugins and functionality, but at the end of the day, the quality of your content is what really makes or breaks a website. The more effort you put into your content, the better the site will look and function.
There are so many different template options available on the market these days that no matter what layout and functionality you want on your website, I am certain you will be able to find a suitable template if you know where to look.
Benefits of using a template website
Just like your flat-pack kitchen table from Ikea probably cost you a lot less then going to a carpenter and asking them to custom design you a new kitchen table from scratch, using a template to build your website is going to cut out a lot of the costs of building a custom designed website.
Normally, a custom website would need to be designed from scratch by a graphic designer. It would then need to go to a website developer to build the website from scratch. This process not only takes weeks but also costs a lot of money as both developers and designers charge by the hour. Once the site is designed and built you can then start the process of loading on your content.
With a template website, you would only need to get a designer on board if you wanted new graphics or images for the website homepage and internal pages. The developer would only become involved if you wanted to add additional functionality or make alterations to the layout/frame work of the website.
Other changes such as colour schemes, homepage content, sliders etc can be performed by most digital marketers with a basic knowledge of coding.
My general advice to everyone looking to build a new website would be to save your money and use a template – hire a digital marketer instead of a developer, and invest the money saved on getting professional content created instead. A digital marketer has a broad range of skills, and will be able to help you write the content, load the content and make it search engine friendly. They will know how to create a seamless brand experience that is user friendly and generates more leads and enquiries for your business.
