A ten-year SEO partnership, proven through a major website relaunch

A Different Kind of Client Relationship

Our client is a Brisbane-based travel specialist with a singular focus: the South Pacific, and in particular Cook Islands and Norfolk Island travel. We started working together in early 2017, when BeKonstructive was only a couple of years old and still a one-person operation. Almost a decade on, we have grown into a full agency with our own team and office, and this client has been with us for the entire journey.

The scope of the relationship has changed over the years. We started out covering a broad spread of digital marketing: copywriting, social media, email, and SEO. As the client’s own marketing capability grew, most of that content and campaign work moved in-house, and we shifted into more of a specialist consulting role on social and digital. SEO is the one thread that never stopped. For nearly ten years, one of our team has acted as this client’s dedicated account manager and lead SEO strategist, working inside their marketing, booking, and product teams rather than alongside them – a level of embedding you don’t often get from an external agency.

That tenure means we’ve been through two major brand refreshes and website rebuilds together, plus a long list of smaller ups and downs along the way, including holding the line on SEO through COVID while a number of this client’s competitors cut their marketing budgets and teams entirely. This case study doesn’t try to cover all of that. Instead, it focuses on the most recent and most significant chapter: a complete website relaunch in November 2025, and what it took to pull off.

The SEO Challenge

Travel is a brutally competitive search category, and South Pacific travel is no exception. Our client goes up against large international travel brands with marketing and SEO budgets many times the size of theirs, and backlink profiles to match. Where those competitors are sitting on tens of thousands of referring domains, our client’s site currently sits at 788 referring domains and just under 3,000 total backlinks. Closing that gap through link building alone was never realistic, especially without compromising on the link quality that keeps a site’s SEO foundation sound.

On top of that competitive pressure, the client’s previous website was ageing. It had been through a couple of visual facelifts over the years, but never a genuine ground-up rebuild. By the time we got to 2025, it was carrying real technical debt: slow page speed, a legacy content structure, and a booking and package-deal system that made the site far more complex under the hood than a typical WordPress travel site. Any SEO or UX improvement had to work within, or around, that complexity.

Our SEO Approach: Depth Over Backlinks

Rather than chase a link volume game we couldn’t realistically win, our strategy leaned hard into content depth instead. This client’s genuine point of difference is firsthand destination knowledge: their team actually travels to the places they sell, again and again, in a way that competitors running their SEO through a distant external agency simply can’t replicate at the same authenticity.

We built our content program around that advantage: destination guides, itineraries, and travel tips written from real, current, on-the-ground experience rather than repackaged research. It’s a slower path to visibility than buying links, but it’s a far more durable one, and it’s the kind of content Google’s own guidance increasingly rewards.

The Relaunch: November 2025

The centrepiece of the last twelve months was a complete website rebuild, launched in mid-November 2025. Unlike the site’s earlier facelifts, this was a ground-up rebuild spanning user experience, technical SEO, content, and a full brand refresh at the same time, built to resolve the speed and technical issues the old site had carried for years.

Because the site’s booking system, package feeds, and product data make it a genuinely complex custom build rather than an off-the-shelf CMS, the migration wasn’t a job we could run from the SEO seat alone. It took sustained collaboration across the client’s marketing, booking and product, and development teams to get URL structures, redirects, page templates, and content migrated without losing the search equity the site had already built up.

In the two months before the public launch, we ran a significant content consolidation project on the old site: merging thin or duplicate pages, cleaning up metadata, and tightening the content structure ahead of migration. That clean-up is actually visible in the search data before the new site even went live, with rankings and visibility already improving through September and October, and then continuing to climb once the new site was live and rebuilt architecture had time to take full effect.

The SEO Results

Travel search is highly seasonal, so rather than a simple before-and-after split, we compared the twelve months immediately before the relaunch project began against the twelve months spanning it, matching the same months year-on-year to cancel out that seasonality.

Metric12 months before12 months spanning relaunchChange
Organic sessions (YoY)~79,200~87,900+11%
Organic conversions (YoY)~840~1,430+70%
Avg. monthly search clicks~3,600~5,300+46%
Avg. monthly impressions~510,000~630,000+24%
Avg. search position~20~11roughly halved

The conversion number is the one we’re proudest of. Sessions grew a solid but modest 11 percent – the relaunch didn’t suddenly flood the site with new visitors. Conversions grew 70 percent over the same period, which tells us the new site is doing a considerably better job of turning the organic traffic it already had into paying customers. That’s exactly what a UX-led rebuild should do, and it’s the harder number to move.

These figures are site-wide rather than isolated to Cook Islands and Norfolk Island alone. The client’s site also carries real organic visibility for a handful of other South Pacific destinations, so the true Cook Islands/Norfolk-specific uplift sits within, rather than exactly at, these numbers.

Built to Last

After nearly a decade, this client is now bringing their SEO function fully in-house. We’re genuinely proud of that. It’s the natural next step after ten years of close collaboration, and it means the foundation we’ve built together – the content depth, the technical health of the new site, the search visibility – is strong enough to be run and grown internally from here.

We’re told plenty of agencies structure a client relationship to create dependency. Ours has always been the opposite: get in close, understand the business as if it were our own, and build something durable enough that the client doesn’t need us forever. Ten years, two full rebuilds, and a relationship that’s ending on genuinely good terms is about as strong a proof point for that approach as we could ask for.

If your brand is fighting bigger, better-funded competitors in a tough search category and you want an SEO partner who plays the long game, we’d love to talk. Learn more about our SEO services here or check out our SEO pricing and packages here.
