Internship FAQs

We’ve listed some important information about our internship program below, including your rights as an intern and what you can expect to learn. While you read through it feel free to get in touch with our team at bek@bekonstructive.com.au if you have any further questions!

HOW DO I APPLY?

The first step is to apply for an internship position by filling in this form. When we have openings available we will make contact with applicants we feel are ideal candidates for the position to conduct interviews. We we’ll usually announce openings for interns on our Facebook and Instagram pages, so make sure you’re following to get the heads up 😉

Our interviews are all about getting to know you and identifying if you will be a good fit for the BeKonstructive brand as well the NFP brands you’ll be working with. Be prepared to talk about everything from your ultimate career goals and what content you’re currently consuming through to your favourite subjects at university. If we think we’re the right fit for each other, we will invite you to join our team. (Yay!)

Please note that our capacity to take on interns is limited – unfortunately we are unable to take on everyone who applies.

I’ve been invited to join the team! What happens next?

At BeKonstructive Marketing, our interns are in complete control of their learning outcomes. On your first day you will spend some time with founder and managing director of BeKonstructive Bek Drayton, creating a ‘program’ that lists all of the learning outcomes you want to obtain during your time with BeKonstructive.

The learning outcomes will be directly tied in with your career goals and you will be in charge of marking items off your Learning Outcomes list – so we will not move from one outcome to the next until you are confident in your ability. We won’t rush you; rather we will support you to learn at your own pace.

How long do your internship programs last?

Following on from the last question – because we allow you to learn at your own pace, you are in total control of your internship program. We are also very flexible with how many hours you do each week – if you are only available one day per week then that is fine, but if you want to come in 2-3 days per week to move through the learning outcomes faster, that is also totally fine.

What are some common learning outcomes?

Your learning outcomes will be tailored to suit your prior knowledge as well as any career goals you have, or what you’re hoping to get out of the internship. As part of the BeKause Marketing program, we partner with NFPs who are often looking for specific services, such as social media posting or blog writing. In those instances, we might be specifically looking to fill a Social Media Internship position so your learning outcomes will be tied in with that area, however we can expand beyond those learning outcomes to include other areas as well.

Some example learning outcomes might include:

  • Social Media:
    • Creating and posting content via a business or company profile
    • Tailoring content for different platforms (eg. how does a piece of content get posted on Facebook vs Instagram vs LinkedIn?)
    • Hashtag research
    • Sourcing imagery
    • Using scheduling tools
    • Creating and managing content calendars
  • Copywriting:
    • Blogging
    • Topic research
    • Interviewing clients
    • SEO Copywriting
    • Copywriting for different mediums – blog, email marketing, landing page, social media
  • SEO:
    • On-page optimisation
    • Keyword research
    • Backlinking
    • Citations and listings
    • Google Analytics
    • Tracking and reporting
    • Using SEO software such as SEMRush

Do the team at BeKonstructive Marketing have qualifications in my field?

You will spend the majority of your internship program working under the guidance of Bek Drayton, our managing director who has 10 years of industry experience as well as a Bachelor in Communications and a Masters in Business (Marketing) – you can stalk her on LinkedIn here. You will be treated as part of our team, participating in team meetings, engaging and interacting with our staff and getting a feel for working in an office environment. You will have the opportunity to shadow our employees and see what ‘a day in the life’ looks like for them.

Do I need any prior experience?

Nope! Our internship program is designed specifically for people who have little to no industry experience and are looking to fix that! We will be selecting people based on their motivation and enthusiasm, as well as how much value we believe we can add for them.

Do I need a university qualification?

Majority of our interns will be current or recently graduated students in fields relating to marketing. This includes communications, PR, journalism, creative industries and creative writing, advertising etc.

While we do consider applications from people outside of these fields, it is rare – please do not apply for this internship if you are studying something completely unrelated and your ultimate career goals do not align with working in the marketing industry.

Is it paid?

Nope. This is an unpaid internship position.

We encourage you to learn about your legal rights as an unpaid intern on the FairWork Australia website.

Is that legal?

We are so glad you asked this question!

We have created the BeKause Marketing Program specifically to increase our capacity to provide fair, legal internships.

We encourage you to read FairWork’s guidelines on internships here prior to applying.

The ultimate rule for an unpaid internship is that if you are not getting paid for your work then the company you are doing your internship with cannot charge clients for your time. Put simply: we cannot profit off your time and labour if we are not paying you.

Therefore we have partnered with some great not for profit brands to provide them with pro bono (free) marketing services. You get real hands-on experience with brands and NFPs get free content marketing services to help them drive the cause and messages. Win Win!

Will I only be working on NFP clients?

You will be working on NFP clients AND BeKonstructive Marketing’s content marketing channels (our Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, blog, email marketing etc).

Interns who are doing their internship as part of a university course may be able to work on some of our client accounts but this will depend entirely on the guidelines that your university provides. This will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

You will get to participate in some learning outcomes in relation to paid clients – this will include attending or sitting in on meetings, participating in brain storming sessions or contributing ideas and thoughts. You’ll also be able to shadow our other team members and assist them in delivering some of their tasks, however in these instances the value of the learning outcome for you need to outweigh any monetary value for BeKonstructive Marketing.

Will you provide me with constructive feedback?

Yes. That is an important part of any internship program, and you will be provided with constructive feedback on all of the work and tasks that you complete. At BeKonstructive Marketing, we encourage a clear and communicative environment where our team members feel comfortable asking and receiving feedback on their work. We believe in constant learning and growth and feedback – both good and bad – is a necessary part of growth.

Will you give me a paid position with BeKonstructive Marketing when I finish my internship?

Completing an internship with us does not guarantee you a paid position on our team.

There are many factors that come into play when we select people for our paid positions – experience, values and fit within our team culture, suitability for the position, career progression and a good fit with our paid clients are just a few.

If and when a paid position becomes available we do invite past and present interns to apply – along with everyone else. There have been occasions where we have stepped interns into paid positions, but we also have employees who have not come through our internship program.

In short: having completed our internship program is not a deciding factor for us when we are filling paid positions, and if your main motivation for doing the internship program is to obtain a paid position on our team then the program will not be a good fit for you.
